Did you know that genital herpes usually affects women? Women often mistake genital herpes as another kind of infection, because of the duration it takes for herpes to appear on the skin. What Herpes Is?

Herpes is a viral disease contracted usually via skin to skin contact. Men usually bear the symptoms at around two weeks after the contact, while women usually see the symptoms after three weeks. Herpes has two strains of virus – HSV-1 and HSV-2.

HSV-1 is more popularly known as cold sores. Cold sores appear around the mouth and are usually with pus. Meanwhile, HSV-2 is genital herpes, which is usually contracted through sexual contact. HSV-2 is also popularly known as a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Genital Herpes Symptoms

Female herpes symptoms, or genital herpes, usually start with itchiness of the affected area and the formation of rashes. These eventually turn into blisters or cold sores. Although the usual sores develop just around the vagina, there are some cases when cold sores start to develop inside the vagina.

Other symptoms of female herpes include:

  • Swollen lymph glands in the groin area
  • Headaches
  • Muscle pains
  • Fever
  • Lower back pain

For women, vaginal discharge is also another symptom of female herpes, as well as a burning, painful sensation when urinating. This is the reason why some doctors misdiagnose it as just a urinary tract infection.

Around 25% of women will also develop meningitis as a result of genital herpes. Meanwhile around 15% will have a painful time urinating due to herpes.

Treatment Of Herpes

After checking the symptoms of female herpes, the next step is knowing the treatment of the skin condition. Sadly, there are no permanent cures yet to herpes, but there are several medications available to either ease the pain of the sores or to prevent it from further spreading. Despite of this, studies have shown that there is still an 80% that you will still be infected even after all these treatments.

Medications include topicals and anti-viral medications. These work differently and only serve to ease the discomfort caused by herpes and prevent them from further spreading.

That's why safe sex should always be practiced to make sure that you are always protected from herpes, whether around the mouth or the genitals.
